Repairs of gym floor are set to begin
The gymnasiums at all four middle schools in the Ocean View School
District were damaged by moisture that caused “bubbling” and
“blistering” after the sealant used to protect the floor failed, said
Carol Stocker, the district’s chief operations and facilities
officer. The problem was first discovered about one year ago.
Vista View’s problems were complicated in September when the
gymnasium’s bleachers were broken after they got caught on loose
flooring.
Mesa View’s gymnasium reopened on Monday -- it had been closed for
repairs since July 21. The district hopes repairs at Spring View and
Marine View middle schools can be postponed until summer vacation so
their gymnasiums can stay open.
The repair bill for the floors at each campus will run to about
$15,000 each, Stocker said, but the district will not have to pick up
the tab. The companies involved in the floors’ construction, SCS
Flooring Systems, Westberg and White Architects and Planners and
Douglas E. Barnhart, Inc., a construction management firm, have
agreed to pay for the repairs, though no one has admitted fault for
the water damage. The district did pay just less than $6,000 to hire
consultants to analyze the damage.
The cost to fix Vista View’s bleachers could total about $12,000,
chief financial officer Mary Lou Beckman said. Insurance will cover
$11,000, and the district will pay the balance.
