Rotary reigns after two-game sweep
Rotary, which needed to get to the postseason playoffs in the city’s
Summer 16 Slow Pitch Softball Thursday League tournament by virtue of
a tie-breaker rule, earned the league championship by twice defeating
the South Laguna Hamstrings.
Rotary took the title after claiming 11-6 and 10-4 wins, at Riddle
Field.
Rotary had qualified for the postseason by a tie-breaking rule
that had eliminated the C-Dawgs from playoff contention.
Rotary made the most of its opportunity, too.
After falling to the Hamstrings, 3-2, in the finals of winners’
bracket play, Rotary advanced to the championship final by
eliminating Team Hobie in a wild, 16-15 game.
Mark Maurer recorded both pitching wins in the championship series
with the Hamstrings.
In the 11-6 win in the first game, Rotary managed just eight hits
but got home runs from Jason Jankanisa and Don Johnson.
They used a seven run sixth inning to decide the outcome.
In the second game, a 10-4 win, Rotary erupted for six runs in the
top of the first inning, using five straight singles to open the
game.
Bob Jameson led Rotary’s offense with a two-run home run and pair
of singles.
Johnson, Troy Medley and Tory Thomas each had a pair of singles
for Rotary.
Top hitters for the Hamstrings in the two games were Ryan Kingman
with four singles, Alex Carter and Jay Twitty with three singles
each, and Clay Snyder, who doubled twice.
