reunion Saturday.

Program geared to help students reach higher

The Laguna Beach Unified School District has implemented a new

program to help all students continue on to higher education.

The program was initiated by Ricardo Gallegos, the district

community liaison, and Elizabeth Reynosa-Bland, the PTA educational

liaison from El Morro Elementary School.

The goal is to help under represented students go on field trips

that visit community colleges and four-year universities.

The program looks at other post high school options like

vocational and certificated schools. There will also be workshops

that help families understand the benefits of a higher education.

Music workshop geared toward children

Music and vocal students in high school and middle school have an

unusual and affordable opportunity to learn alongside inspiring jazz

artists at a special afternoon workshop Saturday.

Jazz vocalist and recording artist Carmen Bradford, along with

four instructors, will work with students and share their

professional insights during a 3 to 6 p.m. clinic that precedes the 8

p.m. benefit concert.

Both will take place in the Laguna Beach Artists’ Theater, 625

Park Ave. The workshop’s cost is $5; drop-ins are welcome and parents

may observe at no charge. Concert tickets are $20, $10 for students

and seniors, 65 and over. For tickets, go online to

SchoolPower Golf Tournament coming up

The 12th annual SchoolPower Golf Tournament at Coto de Caza Golf

Club will be on Nov. 1. More than 200 golfers are expected to tee off

at the “SchoolPower Got Beach Classic.” Organizers said registration

fees and donations are likely to exceed the $100,000, with 90% of the

proceeds going to Laguna Beach schools and the remaining 10% going

directly to the athletic department.

This year’s tournament kickoff party will feature food, drinks,

dancing and prizes. Music will be provided by Laguna band Blues

Offenders.

Admission is $35, and anyone is welcome to attend. For

information, or to register, call SchoolPower at (949) 494-6811.

Registration fees for the golf tournament are $275 for golf and

dinner or $100 for cocktails and dinner only. The registration

deadline is Oct. 22.

Visionary plan becomes a reality for students

Laguna Beach Unified District School Supt. Theresa Daem is working

on a program that would look at each student in a multi-dimensional

way.

The Quest for Excellence Committee and its subcommittees began

researching and planning ways to promote student excellence across

many dimensions, including high levels of wellness, life-long

fitness, social, emotional development and academic depth.

From the findings, the district announced a visionary plan to

develop an individualized student profile for every student in the

district. Laguna resident Gary Greene, professor of special education

at Cal State Long Beach, has been appointed to lead the effort to

develop the process.

Green’s goal is to produce an individualized student profile

process, assessment instruments and a catalog of supplemental

resources that will be piloted during the 2005-06 academic year. For

information, call the district at (949) 497-7700.

SchoolPower hopes to raise like last year

SchoolPower’s fundraising goal this year is to exceed $300,000 for

the second year in a row. The funds go toward a variety of programs

offered at the schools.

All pledges are welcome. Donors of $1,200 and up will receive

special recognition throughout the year, and free tickets to

SchoolPower’s golf tournament on Nov. 1 and dinner dance March 12.

Donors of $50 or more will receive a free “Laguna Locals” discount

card. For information, go to the SchoolPower office, 733 St. Ann’s

Drive, or call (949) 494-6811.

Program will guide music students

Beginning this fall Thurston students and fourth- and fifth-grade

students from El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools will

have an opportunity to participate in the newly formed strings

orchestra.

Philip Felix will direct the after-school program. Felix has

experience in a variety of music education capacities and graduated

from Cal State Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in instrumental

music.

There is no cost for this after-school class. The class will

combine both musical theory and application. For information, call

Philip Felix at (949) 497-7785.
