‘Moose’ adds another award
Rick Devereux
The awards for recent Newport Harbor High graduate Trevor Theriot
kept piling up his senior year.
To that heap he can add one more: the Newport Harbor Male Athlete
of the Year.
Theriot, nicknamed “Moose,” was one of 12 finalists for the
Wendy’s National High School Heisman award after being named the
state winner. He was recently named the Sea View League Male Athlete
of the Year.
He helped lead the Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Division VI
football final, finishing with 1,328 rushing yards and seven
touchdowns on 222 carries.
He was named Newport-Mesa football Player of the Year, CIF
Division VI Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Sea View League Co-Most
Valuable Player, as well as being named to the public school All-Star
team in the Shrine game and a South representative in the Orange
County All-Star game.
He garnered Defensive Player of the Game honors in the Shrine game
after he intercepted and broke up passes and recovered a fumble.
He will be a preferred walk-on for UCLA in the fall.
Theriot also performed well for the Sailors in the throwing ring
for the boys track and field team.
He finished fourth in the Division II shot put with a throw of 55
feet, 9 inches. He was second at the Orange County championships as
well as the league finals with a toss of 55-7. Theriot also finished
third in the Irvine invitational (49-5) and second in the Eagle
Invite (48-10).
