Seahawks win own tournament

Ocean View High rallies to defeat El Modena, 47-43, in girls’ basketball.The Ocean View High girls’ basketball team won the title at its own event, the first Ocean View Tournament, by rallying past El Modena, 47-43, in the championship game.

The Seahawks outscored the Vanguards, 16-8, in the fourth quarter to win the game.

DJ Butler scored 14 points for Ocean View.

Kaitlin Potter, who had 12 rebounds to go along with six points, was named MVP of the tournament.

In other girls’ basketball action, Edison headed into the Christmas break with a 50-32 victory over Centennial. Simone Ibbotson scored 10 points and had eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and Kelly Peterson had nine points, four rebounds and three assists to pace the Chargers.

At the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chandler, Ariz., Huntington Beach won a Red Division fifth-place semifinal game by defeating Sylmar, 48-29. Rita Sitivi scored 15 points and Noe Viloria 14 for the Oilers.

In boys’ basketball:

Huntington Beach pulled away from visiting Katella in the fourth quarter of their nonleague matchup for a 55-43 victory.

The Knights had closed the game to 37-33 after three quarters, but the Oilers outscored the visitors by 8 in the final quarter.

Nick Becker scored 20 points and Jeff VanDoornum 10 for the Oilers.

In the championship game of the Maui Christmas Classic in Hawaii, a late Edison rally fell short, as the Chargers lost to Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, 66-64. T.J. Lipold scored 17 points, Denny Reed 14, Phillip Darin 11 and Tim Golden 10 for the Chargers, who lost for the first time this season.

Lipold and Golden were named to the all-tournament team.

At the North-South Challenge, Marina fell to Brea, 71-51. Sean Starkey scored 26 points and Garrett James 12 for the Vikings.

In boys’ soccer:

Edison notched victory No. 10 and remained undefeated with a 1-0 triumph at San Clemente.

A goal by Jimmy Walker was the lone score of the match as the Chargers (10-0-1) handed the Tritons their first loss in nine matches.
