SHORT TAKES:No injuries reported in gas leak on Irvine Avenue
Newport Beach police and fire departments responded to a gas leak on Irvine Avenue between 15th and 16th streets on Monday evening, police said.
A construction crew working on the Newport Harbor High School renovation project hit a major gas line while digging with a backhoe about 5:20 p.m., Sgt. Chuck Freeman said.
Police, fire and the Gas Company reported to the scene and no injuries or accidents were reported. Residents were not asked to vacate as of Monday evening, and police did not anticipate there would be a need for evacuation.
Following the incident, traffic on Irvine Avenue was temporarily shut down between 15th and 16th streets. Police anticipated the leak would be under control within a few hours of the report.
