Open draws many
One of Orange County’s longest-running tennis tournaments, the Huntington Beach Open, debuts Saturday with match action.
The opening weekend of the tournament continues with play Sunday and concludes with action the weekend of Aug. 25.
The tournament is in its 46th year.
“I think what makes it fun is that a small club puts it on and it’s a ‘friendly’ tournament,” said Rusty Bostelman, who serves on the tennis board at Pacific Sands Cabana Club of Huntington Beach and is an active member of the Huntington Beach Open committee. “I think they all just like being down by the beach.”
Players will contend for titles in the following divisions: men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, Open and Open Senior Men’s Events.
Bostelman said about 240 players are entered in all divisions, 3.5 to Open.
Two dollars from each entry fee will be donated to the Glen Morton Trust Fund.
Morton is a local Orange County tennis pro who was seriously injured in a car accident in 2005.
The tournament draw is closed and match opponents in each division were revealed Wednesday.
Matches will be played at Pacific Sands, the tennis courts at SeaCliff Country Club and Edison High in Huntington Beach and Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.
Finals play will be at Pacific Sands, Bostelman said.
