Gibb second, Ross fifth at Best of Beach event

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb finished second in the Best of the Beach event that completed the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals season Saturday. Gibb, playing with Stein Metzger, was defeated in the final, 21-17, 21-17, by event champion John Hyden and partner Phil Dalhausser.

Gibb pocketed $21,750 for his efforts.

April Ross, a Newport Harbor High product, finished fifth in the women’s event, claiming $5,250. She paired with Jennifer Boss, who won the event, to defeat Tyra Tyrner and Elaine Youngs, 21-18, 21-15, in pool play.

Matt Fuerbringer, a former star at Estancia High, finished 12th in the men’s event, good for $2,000.

Misty May-Treanor did not compete in order to perform on “Dancing with the Stars.”
