Zoran Forgiarini says it possibly is a first. The Edison High surf coach said he can’t remember a past Charger team winning a league championship. What happened on Dec. 4, however, is now etched in his memory bank.

The Chargers captured the Sunset League championship by defeating 17-time national champion Huntington Beach, 89-79, at Edison’s home break, the Santa Ana River Jetties in Newport Beach. Forgiarini said the triumph came just a few weeks after the Chargers scored another first — defeating the Oilers on their home break, the Huntington Beach Pier on Nov. 13.

“Leadership was key,” said Forgiarini, whose Chargers were led by co-captains Matt Payne and Vance Smith.

Edison took a commanding lead in the first heat where Smith, Mich Grant and Cole Devine went 1-2-3. The sweep gave the Chargers a 15-6 lead. Edison also led, 27-15, after the women’s longboard, but after six total heats, Huntington fought back to tie the score at 63.

In the seventh heat — the men’s short board — the Chargers outscored the Oilers, 12-9, to go back in front, 75-72. With the title still up for grabs, the outcome came down to the men’s longboard heat. With Jeff Newell and Sean Thompson scoring 19 and 16, respectively, out of a possible two-wave total score of 20, Edison went on to win the heat, 14-7, to wrap up its first league title.

“It is great to see our surfers feeling the pride of winning,” Forgiarini said.

“Besides winning league, I most proud of how these kids have performed in the classroom. Our team GPA is over a 3.1. Smart students make smart competitors. I also give a big thanks to our assistant coach, Jans Baltgalvis. We are stoked for the great support from longtime sponsors Jack’s Surfboards, Hurley and Body Glove wetsuits.”
