Walk raises money for Independence

The first ever Walk for Independence is in Huntington Beach to raise money for adults with developmental disabilities.

Project Independence, a nonprofit serving all of Orange County, helps adults with autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy or any developmental disability become as independent as possible by giving them the tools they need to do everyday tasks, said event coordinator Roya Sorooshian.

The walk was created to spread awareness and raise money for the organization. Project Independence is trying to install an elevator in its building to make it accessible to all, Sorooshian said. The organization received an elevator, and now it is trying to raise money for the installation.

The half-mile walk around Huntington Central Park will include food from a taco grill, activities and a T-shirt. Registration is $25, but people who bring in more than $100 in pledges will get free registration for themselves and a guest.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 17 at the picnic area of the park.
