High School Roundup: Huntington Beach’s Kaytlin Taylor advances at CIF Individuals girls’ tennis tournament
Huntington Beach High junior Kaytlin Taylor beat Brionna Nguyen of Yorba Linda 6-0, 6-4 on Tuesday in a CIF Southern Section Individuals girls’ tennis round of 32 singles match at Seal Beach Tennis Center.
Laguna Beach’s doubles team of senior Ella Pachl and sophomore Sarah MacCallum also advanced past the round of 32, beating Brenna Whelan and Sydney Thay from Valencia of Valencia 6-1, 6-1.
Edison’s doubles team of Zoe Coggins and Kailee You lost 6-1, 6-0 to Grace Fuss and Carol Cai of Carpinteria Cate.
Taylor, as well as Pachl and MacCallum, all reached Thursday’s round of 16 at 11 a.m. at Seal Beach Tennis Center. The quarterfinals will follow.
Corona del Mar’s doubles team of Reece Kenerson and Jane Paulsen, as well as Marina singles player Mika Ikemori, will also be in action.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Corona del Mar 82, Compton Centennial 44: Jack Stone scored 24 points for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Artesia Tournament pool-play game.
Efe Gucoglu added 18 points for CdM (1-1), which continues pool play against Whittier on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Pacifica Christian Orange County 114, Newport Christian 53: Elijah Paschal had 18 points for the Tritons in Tuesday’s nonleague home game.
Houston Mallette scored 16 points for Pacifica Christian (5-1).
The Seahawks fell to 1-2.
Newport Harbor 49, Foothill 38: Levi Darrow finished with 11 points for the Sailors in pool play at the Grizzly Invitational on Tuesday at Loara High.
Luke Bashore added nine points for Newport Harbor (5-1), which plays San Clemente on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. in the top Diamond bracket.
Edison 52, Godinez 38: The Chargers improved to 3-0 after Tuesday’s game in the Grizzly Invitational at Godinez High.
Estancia 43, Laguna Hills 36: Brandon Pearson had 15 points for the Eagles at the Los Amigos Winter Classic on Tuesday.
Jake Covey added 14 points for Estancia (7-1), which advanced to the semifinals.
Costa Mesa 54, Fullerton 46: Blake Wolf scored 17 points for the Mustangs in Tuesday’s Grizzly Invitational game at Godinez High.
Gio Quero scored 14 and Aiden Spallone added 13 points for Costa Mesa (1-3).
Ocean View 54, Rowland Heights Southlands Christian 47: The Seahawks (4-4) won their second game in the Coyote Classic at Buena Park High on Tuesday.
Laguna Beach 64, El Toro 49: The Breakers are 3-2 after Tuesday’s game in the Grizzly Invitational at Godinez High.
Aliso Niguel 65, Huntington Beach 45: The Oilers fell to 2-5 with Tuesday’s result in the Grizzly Invitational at Segerstrom High.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Sage Hill 52, Cypress 44: Isabel Gomez led the Lightning with 20 points in Tuesday’s Ultimate Flight game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Ocean View High.
Zoe Mazakas added 17 points, and Emily Elliott also had 12 points for Sage Hill (5-3).
Newport Harbor 43, Capistrano Valley 29: Willa Rath had a team-high 19 points and added seven rebounds on Tuesday in a Soaring Flight game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Portola High.
Chloe Swanson added 12 points and rebounds for the Sailors (5-1). Cydney Jover also had six points and three assists.
Estancia 36, Santa Ana Valley 33 (OT): Alejandra Meza had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles in Tuesday’s Premier Flight game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Liberty Christian School.
Brianna Rios added 11 points with two three-pointers, and Alina Sizikova pulled down 22 rebounds.
Estancia (2-4) plays Los Amigos on Wednesday in a 3 p.m. game at Liberty Christian.
Los Amigos 33, Los Angeles Central City Value 26: The Lobos (4-2) won their fourth game in a row in Tuesday’s Premier Flight game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Liberty Christian School.
Newport Christian 46, Pacifica Christian Orange County 42: Hailey MacKay had 19 points, and Rebecca Penjoyan added 10 points for the host Tritons in Tuesday’s nonleague game.
Pacifica Christian fell to 1-2.
Villa Park 46, Corona del Mar 36: Trasara Alexander had a team-high 12 points for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Supreme Flight game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Ocean View High.
Makena Tomlinson had nine points for CdM (4-3).
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Laguna Beach 15, San Clemente 6: Molly Renner had four goals for the Breakers in Tuesday’s season opener at Capistrano Valley High.
Emma Lineback and Nicole Struss each added three goals for Laguna Beach, the defending CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion.
The Breakers play at Studio City Harvard-Westlake on Friday at 4 p.m.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Edison 5, University 0: Nicole Field, Riley O’Brien, Grace Ingalls, Jackie Peterson and Brenna Cerri all scored for the host Chargers in Tuesday’s season opener.
O’Brien, Christina Hardway, Maddie Solorzano and Lily Carroll each had assists for Edison, which plays at San Clemente on Thursday at 6 p.m.
WRESTLING
Newport Harbor went 2-0 in a nonleague tri meet at home on Tuesday.
The Sailors defeated Marina 48-34, receiving pins from Kai Villasenor at 113 pounds, Giovanni Sabatasso (120), Jack Jones (126), Joshua Martinez (132), Aidan Gassel (145), Santino Panasitti (152), Jackson Larner (160) and JJ Perez (220).
Newport Harbor also defeated Costa Mesa 48-24.
