Series: Corona del Mar’s road to a 16-0 football season

Relive the 16 weeks of Corona del Mar High’s memorable football season in 2019.

The year featured record-breaking performances by University of Washington-bound quarterback Ethan Garbers and Stanford-bound wide receiver John Humphreys, and the Sea Kings winning the Sunset League, CIF Southern Section Division 3, CIF State Southern California Regional Division 1-A and CIF State Division 1-A championships.

Coach Dan O’Shea led Corona del Mar to its second 16-0 season, and arguably the program’s best.

Week 0: Corona del Mar 57, Downey 20

Senior quarterback Ethan Garbers breaks his own school single-game records for yardage and passing touchdowns in the Sea Kings’ 57-20 season-opening win.

Week 1: Corona del Mar 42, St. Francis 14

Friday’s results involving Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Sage Hill and Edison.

Week 2: Corona del Mar 20, Palos Verdes 10

John Humphreys, who sat out the first half because of a bruised knee, enters in the second half, catching a 78-yard TD to help CdM beat Palos Verdes 20-10.

Week 3: Corona del Mar 56, Lakewood 7

The Sea Kings earn a 56-7 win against former coach Scott Meyer, who led the program to three CIF Southern Section titles, and improve to 4-0.

Week 5: Corona del Mar 42, San Clemente 21

Ethan Garbers throws for 384 yards and four TDs, three to John Humphreys, as the Sea Kings improve to 5-0 with a 42-21 win on Thursday at Davidson Field.

Week 6: Corona del Mar 49, Huntington Beach 6

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, open Sunset League play with a 49-6 victory, but coach Dan O’Shea is less than thrilled.

Week 7: Corona del Mar 42, Edison 7

The Sea Kings improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Sunset League after Friday night’s lopsided 42-7 victory at Davidson Field.

Week 8: Corona del Mar 42, Fountain Valley 7

Ethan Garbers throws for four TDs, and Riley Binnquist rushes for two scores in the Sea Kings’ 42-7 win, improving to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Sunset League.

Week 9: Corona del Mar 56, Newport Harbor 17

The Sea Kings beat the Sailors 56-17 and secure at least a share of the Sunset League championship on Friday at Davidson Field, giving them eight straight league titles.

Week 10: Corona del Mar 48, Los Alamitos 14

The Sea Kings cap a perfect regular season with a dominant 48-14 win over the Griffins on Friday. Next for CdM is the CIF Southern Section Division 3 postseason.

Week 11: Corona del Mar 49, Santiago 0

The Sea Kings earn their first shutout in a 49-0 win on Friday at Newport Harbor High. CdM (11-0) will host San Bernardino Cajon in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinals next.

Week 12: Corona del Mar 42, Cajon 14

Ethan Garbers throws for 335 yards to lead the top-seeded Sea Kings to a 42-14 win, setting up a trip to No. 4 Alemany in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Week 13: Corona del Mar 48, Alemany 21

Ethan Garbers has seven total touchdowns as the undefeated Sea Kings win 48-21 on the road, advancing to their third CIF Southern Section final in four years.

Week 14: Corona del Mar 56, Grace Brethren 28

Ethan Garbers throws for four touchdowns and runs for three scores, leading the top-seeded Sea Kings to a 56-28 win over the No. 2 Lancers on Friday to avenge last year’s CIF Southern Section Division 4 final loss.

Week 15: Corona del Mar 14, Oceanside 7

Sea Kings linebacker Mason Gecowets tackles Oceanside’s Kavika Tua just short of the end zone, and CdM earns a 14-7 win. The Sea Kings will play San Mateo Serra for the title on Dec. 14 at Cerritos College.

Week 16: Corona del Mar 35, Serra 27

The Sea Kings hold off the Padres 35-27 to win the CIF State Division 1-A championship as quarterback Ethan Garbers sets the CIF Southern Section record for TD passes in a season.
