High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ basketball edges Sage Hill
The Newport Harbor High School boys’ basketball team clipped visiting Sage Hill at the finish Thursday, coming away with a 53-52 win over its crosstown foe in a thrilling nonleague game.
Adam Gaa paced the Sailors with 12 points, followed by Riggs Guy with 10 points. Isaac Davis and Michael Gurka each had seven points, and Jake Read and Zak Robertson chipped in with six points apiece.
Guy also blocked a shot attempt taken off the dribble by Gage Talleur on the final possession.
Newport Harbor ran its record to 9-5 overall.
Jaden Fabella knocked down four three-pointers to key a 14-point performance for Sage Hill (6-7). Tyler Cuff scored 11 points, Talleur had 10 points, and Shaan Patel scored eight points.
The night saw the Sailors retire the jerseys of George Yardley, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and Kyle Caldwell. Yardley wore No. 12, while Caldwell donned No. 50 for the Sailors.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Corona del Mar 54, El Cajon Christian 49: Dorothy Schwenck led the Sea Kings with 19 points Wednesday in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona.
Haley Esquino added 16 points for CdM (4-7). Makena Tomlinson scored eight points, and Megan Martodam chipped in with six points.
Mesa (Ariz.) Westwood 61, Huntington Beach 36: Audrey Nguyen paced the Oilers with 10 points in Wednesday’s game of the Nike Tournament of Champions.
Huntington Beach is 6-8 overall at the end of the tournament.
Highlands Ranch (Colo.) ThunderRidge 46, Huntington Beach 22: Junior power forward Ashley Dean scored six points to pace the Oilers Tuesday in the Nike Tournament of Champions.
Huntington Beach had its four-game winning streak snapped in the process.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Edison 81, Los Angeles Hollywood 36: Trey Wilborn had a team-high 26 points to lead the Chargers Wednesday in the San Gabriel Valley Tournament at Monrovia High School.
Kaz Hampton and Tyler Hampton scored 10 points apiece for Edison (10-3), which won its fifth straight game.
Edison coach Rich Boyce said the Chargers received a forfeit from Gardena in advance of the third-place game on Thursday.
GIRLS’ WRESTLING
The Marina High School girls’ wrestling team ran the table in a four-team dual meet at Corona High School on Wednesday.
Marina (7-1) earned wins over Hesperia Sultana 66-6, Nuevo Nuview Bridge 66-12, and Corona 40-39.
Kaelani Shufeldt (106 pounds), Kacey Schafer (111), River Todd (131), Sadie Scheer (143) and Alex Lopez (150) all recorded three pins on the day for the Vikings.
