College Roundup: UCI shuts out Sacramento State

Matt Tilley and Cameron Iwasa scored within 89 seconds of one another in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament on Saturday at UCI.
Mats Bjurman and Lalo Calzada had assists on Tilly’s goal in the 64th minute, while Mitchell Alvarez assisted Iwasa’s tally in the 65th minute to propel the Anteaters (13-5-2) to the conference semifinals on Wednesday at UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
Michael Breslin made two saves to secure the shutout as UCI posted an 18-7 advantage in shots.
Sacramento State is 6-11-3.

Carlos Valencia and Ramin Amindari scored for the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game on Monday.
Blake Mooney and Maximiliano Aceves had assists and Nathan Brown made four saves for OCC (6-6-7, 5-4-4 in conference).
Santa Ana is 10-6-4, 6-6-1.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Vanguard 88, La Verne 52
Senior DeAngelo Jones scored 21 points and senior Chris Gorman added 17 to help the host Lions in the nonconference game Saturday.
No. 1-ranked Vanguard, the defending NAIA champion, improved to 2-0, while the Leopards fell to 0-1.
Gorman added six assists and four steals for the Lions.
