High School Roundup: CdM, Newport boys’ water polo teams advance

Brendan Hack and Ashton Jajonie each scored three goals for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round playoff match at CdM.
Jon Polos, Garrett Spruth and Ben Brooks each scored twice for No. 4-seeded CdM (23-5). Jack Batden, Andres White and Gabe Dickens added goals.
Nigel Bress made seven saves for the Pacific Coast League champion Sea Kings, and Tristan Ospina added two.
CdM lost the pre-coin flip and will play rival Long Beach Wilson on the road Saturday in the quarterfinals at Belmont Plaza. The time is to be determined. Wilson beat Edison, 11-5, in another first-round match Wednesday.

Newport Harbor 9, Agoura 8
WESTLAKE VILLAGE — Senior captain Clay Davison scored four goals, including the game-winning penalty shot in the fourth quarter, as the Sailors pulled off an upset in Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round playoff match at Westlake High.
Gavin Kunkle, Ryan Braun, Jack Mooers, Hannes Daube and Jackson Westerman also scored for the Sailors (11-16). Senior goalie Nick Wood made six saves.
Agoura, the Marmonte League champion, was ranked No. 7 in the final Division 1 poll, while Newport Harbor was unranked. But the Sailors scored the final three goals of Wednesday’s match to rally for the win.
Newport Harbor will play host to No. 2-seeded Mater Dei in a Division 1 quarterfinal Saturday. Mater Dei defeated Long Beach Poly, 19-2, in another first-round match Wednesday.
