9 local boys’ water polo players are All-CIF selections

Ike Love, Makoto Kenney and Jack White of Newport Harbor High have earned All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 status in boys’ water polo, as did Colton Gregory of Laguna Beach.

Tanner Pulice and Shane Papa of Corona del Mar are All-CIF Division 2 selections, while Caedmon Fisher of Costa Mesa earned the honor in Division 3.

Logan Richard of Estancia and Joshua Nava of Los Amigos were All-CIF Division 6 honorees.

Love, Kenney and White helped Newport Harbor (32-2) go 6-0 in the Surf League and advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship match. The Sailors were upset 5-3 in the final by Studio City Harvard-Westlake, but they came back to beat the Wolverines 10-9 for the CIF Southern California Regional Division I title.

Love, a junior center and the Surf League MVP, led the Sailors with 85 goals and added 26 steals and eight assists. White, a senior attacker, and Kenney, a junior utility player, each scored 68 goals to tie for second on the team. White added 37 assists and a team-best 69 steals, while Kenney had a team-best 60 assists and was second on the team with 68 steals.

Gregory had a team-best 91 goals for Laguna Beach (19-12), which finished second in the Surf League at 3-3 and advanced to the Division 1 quarterfinals. The senior attacker also tied for the team lead with 31 assists.

Pulice and Papa helped CdM (16-14) finish third in the Surf League with a 2-4 record. The Sea Kings advanced to the Division 2 semifinals before losing to Foothill 12-10.

Pulice, a junior attacker, led CdM with 109 goals and 60 steals, while Papa, a senior defender, had 32 goals and 28 assists.

Fisher, the two-time Orange Coast League MVP, led Costa Mesa (17-10) with 154 goals. It was an area-best for the senior left-hander, who also totaled 63 assists and 53 steals, and the goal total was third in Costa Mesa single-season history. He also helped the Mustangs finish 4-0 in league play, win their first league title since 2004 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Division 3 playoffs, where they lost 9-8 to Santa Barbara.

Richard, a sophomore attacker, led Estancia (16-13) with 107 goals, 60 assists and 92 steals. The Eagles finished second in the Orange Coast League at 3-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 6 playoffs, losing 11-7 at top-seeded Tustin.

Nava, a senior utility player, earned Garden Grove League MVP honors after helping Los Amigos (18-11) win the league title by going 4-0. Nava finished with a team-best 128 goals for the Lobos, who lost 12-10 to Culver City in the quarterfinals of the Division 6 playoffs.
