High School Roundup: CdM girls' volleyball claims undefeated Surf League crown

The Corona del Mar High girls’ volleyball team finished an undefeated Surf League run with a 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23 win at Los Alamitos on Tuesday night.

Kendall Kipp had 26 kills and 10 digs to lead the Sea Kings, followed by 12 kills from Nikki Senske and six kills from Karly Recker. Michelle Won added 12 digs.

CdM (23-11, 6-0 in league) will end the regular season by hosting the Battle of the Bay match on Thursday against Newport Harbor.

The Sea Kings entered Tuesday with the least to gain of the four teams in the league. A win could have clinched the league’s second automatic playoff berth for the Griffins (19-13, 2-4).

Los Alamitos’ loss, combined with Huntington Beach’s 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 sweep of visiting Edison, forged a three-way tie for second place in the league.

Huntington Beach (13-12, 2-4) will play Edison (16-14, 2-4) in the first best-of-three tiebreaker match at 5 p.m. at Marina High on Wednesday.

Los Alamitos, which held the best set winning percentage of the teams, will play the winner of the Huntington Beach-Edison match that night in a best-of-three format at Marina, with the winner earning the league’s No. 2 automatic berth into the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 2: Jasmine Amirie had 49 assists, and Lily Walton added 26 digs, as the host Sailors escaped with a 19-25, 26-24, 25-11, 18-25, 19-17 win to clinch a share of the Wave League title on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor (10-19, 5-1 in league) erased five match points en route to the win. Allison Crandell had 16 kills and nine digs. Ava Gonzalez added 11 kills and 10 digs, and Gabbi Higgs chipped in with nine kills.

Laguna Beach 3, Marina 0: Ella Tyus had 12 kills, and Sophia Reavis added eight kills, as the visiting Breakers won 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 in a Wave League match on Tuesday.

The Breakers (13-12, 5-1 in league) shared the inaugural Wave League title with Newport Harbor.

Orangewood Academy 3, Pacifica Christian Orange County 2: The visiting Tritons fell to 3-4 in the Academy League after the Spartans won 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-9 on Tuesday.

Pacifica Christian (10-8 overall) is in third place, but it is also even in the loss column with Connelly (8-9, 2-4 in league). The Tritons host the Koalas on Thursday to end the regular season.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Huntington Beach 14, Marina 4: Haley Forth and Maggie Rae Walker won two doubles sets for the Oilers before they were subbed out of Tuesday’s Wave League match at home.

The Oilers doubles teams of Kaitlyn Palacio and Alissa Wong, as well as Emily Gray and Sahiba Grewal, also won twice before they were subbed out.

Huntington Beach (9-5, 1-1 in league) plays at Laguna Beach on Thursday.

McKenna Livingston swept in singles for Marina (6-7, 0-2), which plays at Edison on Thursday.

Corona del Mar 17, Los Alamitos 1: Kristina Evloeva, Janie Marcus and Roxy MacKenzie each swept in singles for the host Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Surf League match.

The CdM doubles teams of Shaya Northrup and Bella McKinney, as well as Reece Kenerson and Hannah Jervis, won twice before they were subbed out. Jane Paulsen swept in doubles with partners Alden Mulroy and Ashley Thomas.

CdM (12-2, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays at No. 14 Dana Hills in a nonleague match on Wednesday.

Newport Harbor 15, Fountain Valley 3: Lane McArdell and Kristin Lindh swept in singles for the visiting Sailors in Tuesday’s Surf League match.

Amra Barton and Avery Wooden swept in doubles for Newport Harbor (11-3, 2-0 in league), which hosts rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Fountain Valley (4-11, 0-2) plays at Los Alamitos on Thursday.

Costa Mesa 18, Orange 0: Leslie Delgado, Hallie Tran and Rachel Pham swept in singles for the Mustangs in Tuesday’s Orange Coast League match at home.

The Mustangs (12-2, 7-0 in league), who have won 11 straight matches, also swept in doubles.

Costa Mesa hosts Calvary Chapel (6-1 in league) on Thursday in a key league match. The Mustangs can clinch at least a share of the league title with a victory.

FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 7, Fountain Valley 0: Chanse Hill had three goals and an assist for the host Sailors in Tuesday’s Sunset League game.

Lindsey Blanchfield scored twice for Newport Harbor (8-2-1, 6-1 in league). Sarah Roudebush and Chloe Bagiu added goals.

Newport Harbor plays at Westminster on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Edison 205, Marina 265: Chaemin Kim fired a 36-even par, earning individual medalist honors and helping the Chargers clinch at least a share of the Wave League championship at Meadowlark Golf Club on Tuesday.

Erin Johnson finished with a 39 for Edison (13-4, 5-0 in league), which wraps up league play with Newport Harbor (4-1 in league) at Costa Mesa Country Club on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Marina dropped to 1-4 in the league.

Newport Harbor 213, Laguna Beach 276: Wa Yeung Tong was the medalist with a two-over-par 38, keeping the Sailors in contention for a share of the Wave League title after Tuesday’s match at Big Canyon Country Club.

Newport Harbor, which improved to 4-1, has to beat Edison (5-0 in league) at Costa Mesa Country Club on Thursday to split the league championship with the Chargers.

Nicole Nesbitt had a 40 for the Sailors against the Breakers.

Costa Mesa 228, Orange 294: Costa Mesa’s Benecia De Leora finished as the medalist, shooting a 41 in an Orange Coast League match at Santa Ana’s River View Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Mustangs, who improved to 3-5 in the league, play rival Estancia at Costa Mesa Country Club on Wednesday.
