Locals Nelson, Wear competing in NBA Summer League in Las Vegas
Two players with local ties are competing for local teams in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League that began Friday night.
Former UC Irvine standout Luke Nelson, the 2017 Big West Conference Player of the Year, is on the Los Angeles Clippers’ summer league roster.
Travis Wear, a UCLA product who grew up in Huntington Beach and played at Mater Dei High, is a 6-foot-10 forward on the roster of the Los Angeles Lakers, who opened Friday against the Clippers at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Wear played 51 games for the New York Knicks in 2014-15. He averaged 3.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in his only NBA season.
Wear played for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA development league in 2016-17. He averaged nine points and 2.7 rebounds in three playoff games for the D-Fenders, including a 17-point, seven-rebound performance in an April 6 loss to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Former UCI standout Will Davis was on the Detroit Pistons roster for the recently completed Orlando Summer League in Florida. Davis did not play in the team’s five games.
The Lakers are scheduled to play the Boston Celtics on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and face the Sacramento Kings on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Both games are at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Clippers are scheduled to meet the Utah Jazz on Saturday at 5 p.m. and face the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday at 7 p.m. Both those games will be at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.
Their final two games for each team will be scheduled based on seeding.
