Briefs: Four Lions All-GSAC in women’s soccer

Junior forward Madison Cody, who led all Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer players with 42 points in the regular season (two points for a goal and one for an assist), leads four Lions named to the All-GSAC team.

Cody, in her first season at Vanguard after transferring from Santiago Canyon Community College, had 15 goals and 12 assists during the regular season to help the Lions share the conference title with Westmont. Her 15 goals ranked second among conference players, behind only GSAC Player of the Year Katie Farris, a senior forward from The Master’s College.

Senior forward Jennifer Martin and junior midfielder Ashley McCutcheon are repeat all-conference honorees for the No. 10-ranked Lions (15-2-1, 8-2 in conference), who play host to Biola in the GSAC Tournament semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m.

Vanguard senior goalie Lauren Terry has earned all-conference recognition for the second time, having received the honor in 2012.

Martin had 14 goals and six assists in the regular season to help Vanguard outscore opponents, 68-8. She led the team with five game-winning goals.

McCutcheon, a dominant physical presence on defense who is also a key contributor on set pieces on offense, had two goals and four assists in the regular season.

Terry, who posted an 0.49 goals-against average in the regular season, had seven individual shutouts and was in on three others.

VU trio honored

Vanguard University sophomore forward Juan Arellano, a repeat selection, leads three Lions named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer team.

Arellano is joined by teammates Brandon Gomez and Samer Mahmood on the all-conference team after helping the Lions finish third in the regular season.

Vanguard (11-6-1) defeated Biola, 2-0, on Wednesday in the first round of the GSAC Tournament and will meet No. 2-seeded Concordia on Saturday at 2 in the semifinals at Concordia.

Arellano, who had a goal on Wednesday, has six goals and four assists. His three game-winning goals lead the team.

Mahmood, a junior defender who transferred from the University of South Carolina, has three goals, while Gomez, a freshman goalkeeper, has a 1.2 goals-against average. He posted his fourth shutout on Wednesday.

The Lions posted a 6-3-1 conference record in the regular season.

Humphrey Mahowa, a freshman forward for The Master’s College, is GSAC Player of the Year.
