S’mores event adds up to another record for Surf City

Huntington Beach set another world record April 21 when 423 people roasted marshmallows and simultaneously stuck them between flaky graham crackers and gooey chocolate to make s’mores.

Surf City’s record number of people making the sweet treats at the same time beat the previous record set in Wisconsin in May 2015 by 407 people, according to Guinness World Records.

The event, which took place at Huntington State Beach, was sponsored by Abercrombie & Fitch Co. It was created to raise awareness for the company’s $15-million commitment to SeriousFun Children’s Network, which provides camps for children who have serious illnesses, said Mackenzie Bruce, a spokesperson for the upscale clothing company.

“We wanted to host a fun, unique event to bring greater awareness to the wonderful work SeriousFun is going around the world,” Bruce said. “We brainstormed with SeriousFun and learned that s’mores and time around the campfire is an integral part of the children’s time at camp, so we wanted to create a fun and exciting event around that experience. Huntington Beach was a great location for the event.”

Last June, Huntington Beach set two other records: building the largest surfboard and having the most people ride a surfboard.
