2 escape burning apartment in Sunset Beach
Two people escaped their burning apartment Sunday morning during a fire in Sunset Beach that destroyed multiple apartments and damaged several businesses, according to media reports.
A man and a woman who live on the second floor of a building in the 16800 block of Pacific Coast Highway managed to get out when they smelled smoke, the Orange County Register reported.
The man fled through the front door of the apartment and helped the woman escape through a window, according to the report.
A Huntington Beach Fire Department official told the Register that the man was taken to a trauma center for treatment of burns and that the woman was treated at the scene.
The fire destroyed several upstairs apartments at the building, and businesses that occupy the first floor were damaged by smoke and water, according to the report.
Firefighters reportedly responded to the blaze around 9:50 a.m. and had it under control by 10:30 a.m.
Fire officials were not immediately available for further comment Monday.
