The Clippers are promoting Trent Redden to general manager while keeping the core of their front office together by promoting Mark Hughes to senior vice president/assistant general manager.

By selecting Redden as the team’s second-highest-ranking basketball executive, president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank chose someone he has worked with since 2017 when Frank hired Redden as the Clippers’ assistant general manager while building a brand-new front office.

Redden has overseen much of the team’s scouting operations while also overseeing its G League affiliate in Ontario. He fills the general manager position left vacant last week when Michael Winger was hired as Washington’s president of Monumental Basketball.

Redden came to the Clippers after working 11 seasons in Cleveland, where he served as assistant general manager when the Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA championship. Redden worked with Winger early in his stay in Cleveland and, later, current Clippers coach Tyronn Lue.

“A lot of executives have backgrounds in strategy or evaluation,” Frank said in a news release regarding the promotions. “Trent brings expertise and agility in both. Since he joined us, Trent has scoured the globe in search of amateur and pro talent while serving as an integral advisor on every major decision and acquisition we’ve made. He is a respected leader with strong relationships throughout the league, and we’re excited to see him in his new role.”

Hughes coached in the CBA and NBA before working in New York’s front office for 10 seasons, joining the Clippers as assistant general manager in 2017. Hughes has played a role in scouting and, as an executive on most of the team’s road trips, also often serves as a liaison between the Clippers’ front office and roster.

Redden and Hughes have drawn the attention of rival teams in previous seasons but stayed with the Clippers. Frank, in the team’s announcement, called both “close confidants.”

“Mark is a pillar of our organization, with an incredible eye for talent and way with people,” Frank said. “He is a natural leader who helps steer our departments and set our trajectory. He will work closely with Trent and take on even more managerial responsibilities.”
