BCS standings: Florida State is No. 1, Ohio State No. 2

Auburn’s shocking upset of No.1 Alabama on Saturday thrilled a nation as it shook up the last two weeks of the final BCS season.

Florida State and Ohio State moved into the top two spots in the release of the next-to-last Bowl Championship Series standings as the schools moved closer to berths in the BCS title game on Jan. 6 at the Rose Bowl.

Florida State is first with a BCS average of .995, with Ohio State second at .950. Auburn is third at .923, followed by Alabama in fourth at .854 and Missouri in fifth at .843.

Rounding out the top 10 is Oklahoma State, Stanford, South Carolina, Baylor and Michigan State.

Florida State and Ohio State are the only major-conference undefeated teams remaining and can seemingly lock up spots with victories in their conference title games next weekend.

Florida State plays Duke for the ACC Championship in Charlotte, N.C., while Ohio State meets Michigan State for the Big Ten title in Indianapolis.

Boxed out, for now, is the Southeastern Conference, which has won the last seven BCS titles.

Auburn and Missouri play next week for the SEC title in Atlanta in a remarkable comeback tale of programs. Auburn went 0-8 in the SEC last year, capped by a 49-0 loss to Alabama in the Iron Bowl, while Missouri went 2-6 in its first year as an SEC member.

In the battle for a non-automatic qualifying berth into a BCS bowl game, Fresno State’s loss to San Jose State on Friday left Northern Illinois as the team most likely to grab that spot. The Huskies will finish 13-0 if they defeat Bowling Green in next weekend’s Mid-American Conference title game. Northern Illinois is No. 14 in the latest BCS standings.

Northern Illinois will earn a BCS bowl bid if it finishes in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, or in the top 16 ahead of a major conference champion.

Central Florida, the lowest ranked “AQ” major conference leader, is No. 16 in the latest BCS.

The final BCS standings will be released next Sunday.
