Former first-rounder Chris Reed designated for assignment by Dodgers

Former first-round pick Chris Reed was removed from the Dodgers’ 40-man roster Friday, as he was designated for assignment.
The move was made to create a place on the roster for minor league right-hander Preston Guilmet, who was claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, the former team of Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman.
Reed was the 16th overall selection in the 2011 draft. He pitched at Cleveland High in Reseda, as well as at Stanford University.
A 25-year-old left-hander, Reed is yet to pitch in the major leagues. He made 24 relief appearances this season between double A and triple A, posting a combined ERA of 4.28.
Before the season, Reed was ranked by Baseball America as the 10th-best prospect in the Dodgers organization.
Guilmet, 27, was optioned to the minor leagues by the Dodgers.
He started this season in the Toronto Blue Jays organization but was designated for assignment in May and claimed off waivers by the Rays.
Guilmet has pitched in 23 triple-A games this season and has posted a 1.84 ERA. He pitched in three games for the Rays this season and allowed three runs.
He has pitched in 17 major league games over the last three seasons and has a career earned-run average of 6.43.
