Dodgers use youth, Clayton Kershaw to survive rain and Rockies, 6-1

The Dodgers did not care if it was all wet, it was victory.

Their win Sunday featured two longtime minor leaguers getting their first career major league hits and Clayton Kershaw doing his thing on the mound as the Dodgers beat the Rockies, 6-1, at Coors Field in a game called after 5½ innings because of rain.

With Yasiel Puig and Dee Gordon out of the lineup because of fresh hip injuries, outfielder Jamie Romak and infielder Miguel Rojas got their first career starts in the majors and made them memorable.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Colorado left-hander Jorge De La Rosa opened with a bout of wildness. He walked the first two batters before Matt Kemp -– batting cleanup -- tripled both in. It was Kemp’s second triple in two days; he had none this season before collecting one Saturday.

Kershaw, meanwhile, opened the game by recording his first six outs via strikeout. The Dodgers maintained the 2-0 lead until Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo home run on Kershaw’s first pitch in the fourth inning. It was his 17th homer of the season.

The Dodgers came back with four runs in the top of the sixth. Hanley Ramirez absolutely crushed a solo home run, sending it to the walkway beyond the left-field stands. His 10th home run of the season went an estimated 472 feet.

The Dodgers were not done. After De La Rosa went back to his wildness routine, walking Adrian Gonzalez and Kemp, Romak finally got his moment in the baseball sun.

Romak, 28, was called up May 28 when Carl Crawford went on the disabled list. He had battled for 12 years in the minor leagues before the call-up. In the ninth major league plate appearance of his life, he collected a two-run double for his first career hit.

That brought up the Dodgers’ other rookie making his first career start, Rojas.

Rojas, 25, had spent nine years in the minors until getting his first call to the majors last week. He collected his first big league hit Sunday with a single that scored Romak.

The rain delay came in the middle of the sixth, the Dodgers now up 6-1.

Umpires originally said the game would resume at 5 p.m., but when they came back onto the field the skies were not cooperating and the game was called after a delay of 1 hour 35 minutes.

Kershaw officially went five innings, raising his record to 5-2. He held the Rockies to one run and three hits. He did not walk a batter, and for the third consecutive game, and the sixth time in seven starts since coming off the disabled list in early May, he struck out nine.

Because the Dodgers were already ahead going into the sixth, their stats from the top of the inning count.
