Dodgers sign journeyman Chad Gaudin as potential rotation depth

Apparently the theory is, if you sign enough broken down pitchers who once had it going and just one rebounds, that’s a no-lose signing.

The Dodgers added another pitcher with a worrisome injury history and former Oakland A’s connections Wednesday when they signed journeyman right-hander Chad Gaudin to a minor league contract with an invite to their major league camp.

Gaudin did not pitch all last season after signing with the Phillies and failing his physical, apparently because of a neck injury. He pitched for the Giants in 2013 and did pretty well, going 5-2 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, splitting time between starting and relief.

Gaudin, who turns 32 next month, is 45-44 with a 4.44 ERA and 1.49 WHIP for his career. He was also arrested in early 2013 for allegedly groping a 23-year-old woman while in a hospital emergency room. He later pleaded no-contest to a disorderly conduct charge and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and impulse control counseling.

He pitched for Dodgers General Manager Farhan Zaidi in Oakland. This is his 10^th team during his 12 seasons, not including the Phillies, and he’s made two stops with the A’s and Yankees.

Zaidi told reporters the Dodgers signed Gaudin as rotation depth.

The Dodgers have also signed Brandon Beachy and Eric Bedard in the hopes those two pitchers can rebound.
