Zack Greinke’s shutout streak ends in Dodgers’ 3-2 loss to Mets
Zack Greinke ended his start Sunday with his current scoreless inning streak at … 1 1/3 innings.
Maybe it’s the start of something big, but his assault on the record books ended at 45 2/3 innings on a bright Sunday afternoon in New York.
The Mets didn’t exactly beat up Greinke -- they ended his streak on a hit batter, a single, a big error by Joc Pederson and a fielder’s choice -- before going on to beat the Dodgers, 3-2, on a single in the 10th inning by ex-Dodger Juan Uribe at Citi Field.
Greinke pitched very well, if not quite as sharp as he had been in his past six starts. Of course, in those starts he wasn’t pitching two days later than normal after a pair of cross-country flights back to Los Angeles to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.
Here’s a sentence that would have been unthinkable to write over the past six weeks: Greinke was actually outpitched by the Mets.
Reigning Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom was brilliant for the Mets, holding the Dodgers scoreless on just two hits in his nearly eight innings.
Greinke’s scoreless streak -- the fourth-longest streak in modern baseball history -- ended in the third inning. He started his own trouble by hitting outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to lead off the inning. Catcher Kevin Plawecki collected the Mets’ first hit with a clean single to center, but Pederson overran the ball for an error to enable Nieuwenhuis to take third on the error.
With no outs, the Dodgers elected to play the infield at normal depth, essentially conceding the run to go for the double play. After DeGrom failed to get down the bunt, he bounced to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez elected to throw home, but Nieuwenhuis slid ahead of the tag and Greinke’s remarkable streak had ended.
Dodger Orel Hershsier holds the all-time scoreless streak at 59 innings.
The Mets scored their second run off Greinke in the sixth after Curtis Granderson led off with a single. Granderson stole second and took third on a sacrifice fly. Greinke intentionally walked Daniel Murphy before Kelly
Johnson bounced sharply to Gonzalez.
Gonzalez again came home, but this time his throw was just in time to nip Granderson. Greinke walked Lucas Duda to load the bases but again got in trouble with a hit batter. He hit rookie Mike Conforto on the arm to force in the second run.
Greinke went seven innings, allowing the two runs on four hits, three walks and two hit batters. He struck out three. In his 20 starts this season, he has allowed more than two runs in only three games.
DeGrom held the Dodgers scoreless in his 7 2/3 innings. He allowed only two hits and two walks, striking out eight.
Greinke’s baseball-leading earned-run average went up to 1.37. DeGrom, who is second in ERA behind Greinke, lowered his to 2.05.
The Dodgers rallied to tie the game with two runs in the ninth off Mets closer Jeurys Familia. Gonzalez doubled off the wall in center and scored on another double by Justin Turner. Carl Crawford ran for Turner and scored when Yasmani Grandal singled under the glove of a diving Juan Uribe at third.
But in the bottom of the 10th, Granderson stretched a single into a double and scored when Uribe singled off the wall against Kenley Jansen.
The loss completed the Dodgers’ 10-game road trip at 5-5.
