Now Dodgers outright Brandon Beachy to triple-A
He’s up, he’s down, he’s … what exactly?
Brandon Beachy’s full return from a second Tommy John surgery in three years took another turn Wednesday when the Dodgers outrighted the right-hander to triple-A Oklahoma City.
That opens a spot on their 40-man roster, always an interesting development, whether in anticipation of another move or to provide simple flexibility.
The Dodgers said Beachy, 29, will still join the Dodgers in camp next month as a non-roster invitee.
The Dodgers just signed Beachy three weeks ago to a non-guaranteed $1.5-million contract that includes several performance bonuses. Still, a lot of money to pay someone who figures to start the season in the minors as rotation insurance if not cut. Who said the Dodgers were not still flexing their financial muscle?
Beachy made two starts for the Dodgers last season, and if it did not go particularly well (0-1 with a 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in eight innings), the Dodgers decided to go the optimistic route. He had his second Tommy John in March 2014 and the financial gamble is he is still building arm strength to match the pitcher he was prior to his first surgery.
Beachy was 12-10 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with the Braves prior to his first surgery in 2012.
