Spring training: Dodgers 4, Arizona 2
Reporting from SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Dodgers 4, Arizona 2
ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Brett Anderson made his best start of the spring, giving up four hits and a walk in six scoreless innings. Anderson struck out two and induced three double plays. “I was able to get ground balls, be fairly efficient,” Anderson said. With Hyun-Jin Ryu starting the season on the disabled list, the Dodgers are counting on Anderson to remain healthy, something he has not done in recent seasons. Anderson has pitched fewer than 100 innings in each of the last four season. Nonroster right-hander Mike Adams was charged with two runs and three hits in the seventh inning. Left-handers Paco Rodriguez and Adam Liberatore maintained their 0.00 earned-run averages, with Rodriguez pitching a scoreless ninth inning and Liberatore recording the first two outs of the eighth.
AT THE PLATE: Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a double to right-center field and scored on a groundout by Adrian Gonzalez. The Dodgers made it 2-0 later in the inning when Carl Crawford tripled in Howie Kendrick. A fourth-inning double by A.J. Ellis drove in Juan Uribe, who returned to the lineup after sitting out one game because of an upper-respiratory illness. Utilityman Enrique Hernandez was two for two and raised his average to .278.
EXTRA BASES: When Anderson hit Tuffy Gosewisch with a pitch in the fifth inning, the Diamondbacks didn’t retaliate. When reliever Mike Adams struck Yasmany Tomas in the seventh, the Diamondbacks again did nothing. Like that, the tension between the division rivals was diffused. Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly spoke with Diamondbacks Manager Chip Hale before the game to emphasize that his pitchers didn’t purposely throw at Hale’s batters the last time the teams played. In that game last week, hitters on both teams were hit and four Diamondbacks were ejected. Rollins said he thought the Diamondbacks purposely threw at Justin Turner, and Hale countered by telling a Phoenix-based radio station, “They can talk all they want, talk is cheap in my opinion. You know, they’re good at it. We’re just going to worry about playing the game. They can talk all they want about it.”
