Dodgers claim victory over Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-4, in extra innings

KEY MOMENT: Second baseman Howie Kendrick broke a 3-3 tie with a go-ahead home run in the 10th inning. The Dodgers improved to 4-3 in extra-inning games.

ON THE MOUND: Carlos Frias labored early. He needed 98 pitches to get through five innings, and he gave up three runs with just one strikeout. The Diamondbacks scored in the second inning on a Chris Owings sacrifice fly and again in the fourth inning on a two-run home run from Nick Ahmed. By the time Frias exited, the Diamondbacks had a 3-2 lead, and after Monday’s disastrous outing, the Dodgers’ bullpen was taxed. However, there would be no repeat performance. Juan Nicasio, Pedro Baez and Joel Peralta did not give up another run. Kenley Jansen allowed a run on a Paul Goldschmidt double but held on for his 12th save of the season.

AT THE PLATE: Kendrick and catcher Yasmani Grandal combined to drive in all six Dodgers runs. Grandal hit his second home run in as many games with a blast in the second inning that scored two runs and gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. After the Dodgers went down, 3-2, Kendrick drove in the tying run with a seventh-inning single. Grandal followed Kendrick’s 10th-inning home run with a double that scored two runs.

EXTRA BASES: Injured outfielder Carl Crawford, who has missed two months with a torn side muscle, made his first rehabilitation appearance with single-A Rancho Cucamonga. Crawford was the designated hitter and batted second. He was hitless in three at-bats but walked and scored a run in his first plate appearance. ... With triple-A Oklahoma City, Brandon League pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout. The appearance could be the reliever’s last before he rejoins the Dodgers, Manager Don Mattingly said. ... Injured right-hander Brandon Beachy is scheduled to pitch Wednesday with Oklahoma City. … On Monday, the Dodgers played their longest nine-inning game of the season. Tuesday’s four-hour and nine-minute game was the longest of five 10-inning games.
