Dodgers power way past Giants, 7-3, with four home runs

KEY MOMENT: With two on and two outs in the top of the second inning, right fielder Andre Ethier made a diving catch at the warning track in right-center field to take away a certain extra-base hit from Joe Panik. The spectacular catch almost certainly prevented two runs from scoring and preserved what was then a 4-1 advantage for the Dodgers.

ON THE MOUND: Zack Greinke improved to 4-0 by limiting the Giants to three runs over six innings. This was arguably the least sharp of Greinke’s performances this season, as he gave up seven hits and two walks. At the end of four innings, his pitch count was already at 86. Adam Liberatore, Chris Hatcher and Yimi Garcia each pitched a scoreless innings.

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers hit four home runs, which tied their season-high for the most in a game. Three of the home runs came in the first inning, as Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier sent pitches by the Ryan Vogelsong over the outfield wall. Jimmy Rollins homered in the third inning.

EXTRA BASES: Brandon McCarthy said he would undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday morning to repair a torn ligament in his elbow. The operation will be performed by Neal ElAttrache, the team’s physician. McCarthy, who was injured on Saturday in a start in San Diego, is expected to be sidelined until the middle of next season. … Carlos Frias will step into the rotation spot that belonged to McCarthy and start on Friday in the opening game of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Scott Baker will start Saturday. Baker limited the San Diego Padres to three runs over seven innings on Sunday. … The Dodgers’ nominees on the All-Star ballot are Adrian Gonzalez at first base, Howie Kendrick at second, Juan Uribe at third, Jimmy Rollins at shortstop, Yasmani Grandal at catcher, and Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson and Carl Crawford in the outfield. Puig was the only Dodgers position player who was voted into the National League starting lineup last season. … Former Dodgers left-hander Kaz Ishii threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
