A month after notching his 200th career victory on an exhilarating April night in Chavez Ravine, Clayton Kershaw took the mound at home under a different set of emotional circumstances Tuesday night — it was just three days after the death of his mother, Marianne Tombaugh.

“I think once you get out there and you get into compete mode, that’s just what you know,” manager Dave Roberts said before the game. “Obviously, he’s never been in this situation before, but I expect it to go well and for him to do what he’s supposed to do.”

Kershaw fell short on both counts in a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins before a sellout crowd of 52,159, grinding through a wobbly four-inning, two-run, seven-hit, 90-pitch start in which he failed to provide much relief for a bullpen that had to cover eight innings in Monday night’s 12-inning victory.

Walker Buehler aims to be back by September. Dave Roberts isn’t so sure

Walker Buehler is targeting a Sept. 1 return to the Dodgers rotation from his second Tommy John surgery, a timeline that manager Dave Roberts termed “aggressive” but not out of the question.

“It’s hard to bet against this guy, but Sept. 1 is not what I was hearing,” Roberts said before Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins. “I’m happy he feels that way. That’s a good thing. That’s embedded in Walker, the confidence, so it’s not surprising.”

The typical recovery time for ligament-replacement surgery is 14 to 18 months. Buehler, who underwent the procedure in 2015, after he was drafted in the first round by the Dodgers out of Vanderbilt, had his second surgery last August, so a Sept. 1 return would peg his recovery at one year.

‘It’s hard to hit.’ How Dodgers rookie James Outman is dealing with an inevitable slump

Dodgers center fielder James Outman hits a two-run home run against the San Diego Padres on May 7.
(Alex Gallardo / Associated Press)

It’s a tale as old as the game itself. Rookie breaks camp with big-league club for first time and crushes opposing pitching. Scouts find holes in youngster’s swing. Pitchers make adjustments to exploit weaknesses. Rookie goes into extended slump.

James Outman is hardly the first, and he certainly won’t be the last player to rise and fall with baseball’s kiddie coaster, the Dodgers outfielder cooling off in May after winning National League rookie of the month honors in April, when he hit .292 with a .991 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, a major league-leading seven homers, three triples, 20 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

In 18 games since April 26, the left-handed-hitting Outman is batting .193 (11 for 57) with a .619 OPS, one homer, four doubles, four RBIs, 27 strikeouts and six walks, his struggles reaching a point where he did not start against Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez in Monday night’s 9-8, 12-inning win in Dodger Stadium.

Would readers take a gondola to Dodger Stadium from Union Station?

We asked readers if they would or would not use the gondola, or if they were not sure.

By just a few votes, “yes” received the most responses. Here are the areas that readers cited the most as factors in their decisions:

Monday recap: Dodgers get dramatic walk-off win in 12th inning against Twins

What was left of a crowd of 49,749 in Chavez Ravine got to witness some middle-of-May high drama Monday night when Trayce Thompson, mired in an 0-for-30 slump, drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Dodgers to a 9-8 walk-off win over the Minnesota Twins.

Max Muncy provided some early muscle with home runs in his first two at-bats, and Phil Bickford provided three gutsy innings of relief, throwing a career-high 48 pitches and limiting the Twins to one run and one hit to help the Dodgers win extend their winning streak to six and notch their 14th victory in 16 games.

A Dodgers bullpen that had a National League-best 2.15 ERA since April 27 blew a three-run lead in the eighth inning and a one-run lead in the ninth, but Bickford, the last reliever manager Dave Roberts wanted to use, salvaged the night by escaping a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the 10th and adding a scoreless 11th and 12th.
