And then things got really heated.

A genuine baseball brawl broke out, with punches and scrums and plenty of anger.

After Ian Kennedy hit Yasiel Puig in the nose with a pitch in the sixth, the next inning Zack Greinke immediately hit Miguel Montero in the back with a pitch.

Benches emptied that time, but there was no activity.

But in the bottom half of the seventh inning, when Kennedy hit Greinke in the shoulder with a pitch, all kinds of chaos broke out.

Juan Uribe, Ronald Belisario and Luis Cruz appeared to lead the first wave of Dodgers into a huddle of Diamondbacks just in front of their dugout as benches and bullpens emptied in a hurry.

Arizona third base coach Matt Williams grabbed Dodgers manager Don Mattingly by the top of his jersey to hold him back, but several Dodgers got into with Diamondbacks coach Turner Ward.

Belisario appeared to throw several punches, as reliever J.P. Howell came in and drove Ward into a railing.

There were several outbreaks of anger all over, Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire getting in the face of Arizona Manager Kirk Gibson and then being pulled back by Williams.

At some point Puig jumped into the middle of it all and had to be pulled back out of a scrum. He also appeared to throw a punch at Arizona infielder Eric Hinske.

It took a long time for order to be restored.

Then the umpires huddled and tried to figure out whom to eject. Since both benches had already been warned, Kennedy and Gibson were automatic. The umpires also ejected Puig and McGwire from the Dodgers, and Ward from Arizona.
