Dodgers might not get Jerry Hairston Jr. back this season

The return of Jerry Hairston Jr. this season does not looking promising.

Dodgers trainer Sue Falsone said Hairston had an anti-inflammatory injection last week on his inflamed left hip, had not shown improvement and could be headed for arthroscopic surgery.

“He’s still in pain, still having some hip issues, not really responding to conservative treatment,” Falsone said. “You would hope that he’d be feeling better after an injection. But he’s just not feeling real well.”

Hairston had been playing semi-regularly when he was placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 13 because of the sore hip, saying it privately had been bothering him to some degree for nearly two months.

Falsone said an arthroscopic surgery on his hip would be similar to a clean-up procedure performed on shoulders. She said if it was decided to perform the procedure, Hairston should be ready to resume baseball activities by spring training.

Hairston is under contract with the Dodgers next season.

“His docs would have to decide exactly what they would do and how they would do it,” Falsone said. “We’re not quite there yet. We’re still going to monitor him the next day or two and see if we can make a big change coming up, but with the injection last week, we’d be expecting him to be a lot better right now.”

Hairston was batting .273 this season, but had struggled since the hip flared. He was hitting .297 on July 17, but in his last 12 games was just five for 38 (.131). He had started mostly at third and second base, but had also seen time in left.

The Dodgers have also lost infielder Justin Sellers for the rest of the season, announcing Tuesday he would have back surgery.
