Mission League football race is anybody’s guess

Who’s going to win the Mission League in prep football? It might take a genius to predict the order of finish.

“I have no idea,” Mission Hills Alemany Coach Dean Herrington said.

League play doesn’t begin for two weeks, but Alemany (3-0), Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (3-0), Los Angeles Loyola (3-0), West Hills Chaminade (3-0), Encino Crespi (3-0), Gardena Serra (2-1) and La Puente Bishop Amat (2-1) all won nonleague games Friday night.

Bishop Amat, in particular, is creating buzz. Last week, the Lancers went to Texas and defeated Aledo, 42-7. Then they routed No. 14 Rancho Cucamonga, 46-17, with junior quarterback Damian Garcia passing for 199 yards and four touchdowns.

Among the Mission League standouts, Alemany quarterback Blake Green passed for 338 yards and four touchdowns and Dominic Davis scored three touchdowns against Harbor City Narbonne; Chaminade quarterback Ed Sias passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns against Valencia; Notre Dame had four interceptions in a victory over San Mateo Serra; Crespi’s defense limited Lawndale to three yards in total offense.

“If you don’t bring your A game each week, you’re going to lose,” Herrington said about the coming league matchups.

Sweet game

Kyle Sweet of Santa Margarita caught a school-record 15 passes for 201 yards in the Eagles’ 21-10 victory over Dorsey. The Eagles (3-0) make a trip to Las Vegas next week to face Bishop Gorman (4-0), which needed a late two-point conversion to defeat Corona Centennial, 43-42.

Empire busters

Tesoro (2-1) has beaten Temecula Chaparral and Upland the last two weeks, knocking off two of the top teams from the Inland Empire. Against Upland, Tesoro had five sacks and quarterback Devon Modster passed for 288 yards.

Tesoro gets a showdown game with unbeaten Corona del Mar in two weeks.

Bosco responds

Trailing, 14-7, in the third quarter, No. 1 St. John Bosco (3-0) put together a five-touchdown barrage to defeat Oregon Central Catholic, 42-14. Sean McGrew rushed for 148 yards and Clifford Simms for 117. The Braves are off next week, then head to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman for a game against the Gaels on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. on national television.

Winning debut

It didn’t take long for freshman quarterback Matt Corral of Westlake Village Oaks Christian to show he could play on varsity. Injured and unavailable in the Lions’ first two games, he made his high school debut Friday, coming off the bench to pass for 193 yards and three touchdowns in the team’s 48-3 victory over Venice.

“I thought he played outstanding,” Coach Bill Redell said.
