High school roundup: Perris Citrus Hill’s Manny Berz ties state record for career field goals
Citrus Hill kicker has made 38 of 42 field goal attempts in his career.
Kicker Manny Berz of Perris Citrus Hill has tied the state record for most career field goals at 42 after making a 32-yard field goal on Friday night against Beaumont.
The state record was established by Kevin Robledo of Westlake Village Westlake in 2014. Berz can break the record next week on senior night against Hemet.
“It means a lot because this didn’t just start this week,” Berz said. “It’s been a long journey since freshman year.”
Berz, who has a 4.1 grade-point average and is being recruited by Kansas State, Army, Navy and Southern Utah, gave credit to his long snappers and holders over the last four seasons for helping him succeed.
Shoving incident: L.A. Cathedral Coach Kevin Pearson was caught on camera shoving a player who was trying to calm him down near the conclusion of his team’s 24-17 victory over La Canada St. Francis on Friday night.
An assistant coach also tried to restrain Pearson, who said he was trying to call a timeout, while others thought he was going to challenge an official, leading to the incident. He said he should have acted differently.
Los Altos stays unbeaten: In a battle of undefeated teams, Hacienda Heights Los Altos defeated Covina Charter Oak, 21-7. Los Altos is 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Hacienda League. Charter Oak dropped to 8-1 and 3-1.
Division 1 intrigue: Sixteen of the 18 teams in Southern Section Division 1 will qualify for the playoffs. As it stands, it appears the final spot will come down to either Anaheim Servite (4-5), Mission Hills Alemany (3-6) or Loyola (3-6).
Servite can clinch a spot with a win over Santa Margarita. A .500 or better record gets you into the playoffs.
Hawkins is rolling: There’s no stopping Los Angeles Hawkins (9-0, 4-0) these days. The Hawks are headed to their first Coliseum League championship after defeating Crenshaw, 60-44.
That means Hawkins has beaten Los Angeles, Dorsey and Crenshaw in consecutive games, something few people thought was possible. Running back Greg Johnson has surpassed 1,000 yards rushing. Quarterback Dylan Lemle is nearing 2,000 yards passing. Receivers Jalen Hall and Joseph Lewis are considered two of the best college prospects in the nation.
Hawkins should be the No. 1 seed for City Section Division II when the pairings are announced on Nov. 5. A rematch against league rival Los Angeles is likely in the finals on Dec. 3 at El Camino College.
Streakbuster: Manhattan Beach Mira Costa ended a 30-game Palos Verdes winning streak in league play with a 21-20 Bay League victory. Mira Costa rallied from a 20-7 deficit as Justin Goring rushed for 172 yards and one touchdown.
