Baseball: Fountain Valley hands No. 1 Huntington Beach a 9-7 defeat
Fountain Valley had its hitting attack in high gear on Wednesday, and No. 1 Huntington Beach was beaten by the Barons, 9-7, in a Sunset League game.
Fountain Valley (14-6, 8-1) received three hits and four RBIs from Oregon-bound Daniel Patzlaff. Dan Rosica delivered a two-run double during a three-run fifth when Fountain Valley rallied from a 7-5 deficit.
Huntington Beach (15-3, 8-2) received three hits from Cooper Moore. The two teams play again on Friday at Fountain Valley.
Edison defeated Newport Harbor, 5-1. Noah Kronfly threw a complete game, allowing four hits. Edison is 15-5 and 6-2.
In the Century League, Foothill defeated El Dorado, 3-1, in 13 innings. Hudson Hughes hit a two-run home run in bottom of the 13th. He also had a home run in the fifth inning. Dillon Brown threw six shutout innings of relief for the win.
In the Foohill League, Valencia (12-7, 6-2) pulled into a first-place tie with Hart (15-3-1, 6-2) and Saugus (12-6, 6-2) after a 10-6 victory over the Indians. Chad Bible, Hunter Holland and Keston Hiura each hit a home run. West Ranch defeated Golden Valley, 13-0. Jake Bird allowed one hit and struck out eight in six innings. Nick Ruffino had a double and triple and three RBIs. Saugus defeated Canyon, 8-2. Rex Kemple had three hits.
In the West Valley League, Riley Conlan had a three-run home run and Josh Garcia threw a shutout in Chatsworth’s 12-0, five-inning win over Cleveland. Sam Shaikin had three hits.
Conner Dreyer struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings in Granada Hills’ 4-1 win over Taft. Michael Scolaro had an RBI double and picked up the save. Max Mehlbaum and Alex Rodarte had two hits each for Taft. El Camino Real defeated Birmingham, 12-1. Jeremy Polon got the victory. Christian Bloom had a two-run single. Bloom and Dylan Hirsch each had three hits.
In the East Valley League, Poly defeated Verdugo Hills, 4-2. Alonso Hernandez had three hits and two RBIs. Isaac Gutierrez threw a complete game. Arleta upset North Hollywood, 2-1, behind Mickey Galindo, who threw a two-hitter.
In the Sea View League, Kolby Allard struck out nine in six shutout innings in San Clemente’s 6-0 win over San Juan Hills. It was the 300th coaching victory for Dave Gellatly of San Clemente.
In the Marmonte League, Moorpark defeated Westlake, 5-1. Trevor Weston struck out four and walked none in a complete game. Troy Conway had two hits. Thousand Oaks defeated Newbury Park, 3-2, in eight innings. Bailey Holbrook hit a home run and Jeff Wilson, Jack Rosenberg and Michael Brady each had two hits. Jeff Tincher had three hits for Newbury Park.
In the Sierra League, Charter Oak knocked off Chino HIlls, 3-1. Kyle Dohy struck out 10 in six innings. Ayala defeated Damien and ace Grant Hockin, 3-2. Ryan Aguilar had the game-winning hit in the sixth.
In the Trinity League, Servite defeated Santa Margarita, 4-1. Nigel Ward threw a three-hitter. JSerra defeated St. John Bosco, 5-4. Jake Pries hit a home run. Ryan Watts hit two home runs and Josh Morgan had three hits in Orange Lutheran’s 9-2 win over Mater Dei.
In the South Coast League, Mission Viejo defeated El Toro, 4-0. Patrick Sandoval allowed five hits and struck out four.
In the Valle Vista League, Baldwin Park defeated Covina, 3-1. Justin Padilla had two hits.
In the Bay League, Peninsula is 16-3 and 4-0 after a 4-2 win over West Torrance.
Cypress defeated Yorba Linda, 6-3. Isaiah Parra had two hits and two RBIs.
In the Righetti tournament, Brandon Ponticelli improved to 7-0 in Alemany’s 8-2 win over St. Bonaventure. Demetri Pagalidis had two hits and three RBIs. Terrell Tate had two hits and three stolen bases. Alemany also defeated Lompoc, 8-0. Adam Bedrossian, Ruben Cardenas and Pagalidis each had two hits.
Aliso Niguel swept a doubleheader from Capistrano Valley, 6-4 and 3-2. La Mirada won the St. Paul tournament championship with a 6-0 win over Narbonne. Darren McElroy threw a complete game. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Banning, 10-4. Mike Wilson had two hits.
At USC, Bishop Amat defeated Loyola, 7-4. The Lancers were down, 4-0. Michael Palos had a three-run double in the sixth. Sergio Robles and Anthony Walters each had two hits.
Buena defeated Chaminade, 4-3.
