Baseball: Cleveland wins Southern California Invitational
In another indication of how tough the West Valley League will be this season, Reseda Cleveland (7-2) won the Southern California Invitational championship on Thursday with an 8-2 victory over Simi Valley Royal.
Alex Zepeda gave up a first-inning home run to Matt Sciumbato, then shut down the Highlanders through five innings. Ben Kaser and Sam Villa each had three hits.
Taft 13, University 3: The Toreadors (9-2) hit six home runs, including two apiece from Jayson Newman and and Jacob Davies. Newman has eight home runs in 11 games.
Birmingham 1, Sylmar 0: Adrian Rodriguez struck out nine in a complete game. Alexis Miranda had the game-winning RBI double. Jake Arevalo pitched a complete game for Sylmar. Rodriguez, the returning City player of the year, has 22 strikeouts in 20 innings, one walk and a 1.05 ERA.
Dana Hills 9, El Toro 1: The Dolphins improved to 8-0 in advancing to Saturday night’s 7 p.m. final of the Loara tournament at Glover Stadium against San Clemente. Zach Wolf is 3-0 after picking up the pitching victory. Marrick Crouse and Grant Peters each had two hits.
San Clemente 13, Long Beach Millikan 1: Lucas Herbert had a three-run double for the Tritons (4-0). Kolby Allard struck out four and walked four in four innings.
Garden Grove Pacifica 6, Long Beach Wilson 4: Damien Banks went three for three, including a home run, to lead Pacifica.
Santa Margarita 4, Fountain Valley 0: Nick Meyer and Andrew Mendonca each had two hits and Kyle Bushhousen threw five shutout innings for the Eagles.
Edison 6, Irvine 0: Noah Kronfly struck out six and allowed one hit in five shutout innings for the Chargers (7-1).
Vista Murrieta 2, Marina 1: Angel Ortiz had two hits and three pitchers combined on a three-hitter for the Mustangs.
Hamilton 4, St. Francis 3: Benji Kaiserman had three hits and two RBI, including a walk-off game winner in the seventh to help Hamilton reach the final of the Arcadia Elks tournament.
Great Oak 4, Oceanside El Camino 3: Mitch Hayes hit a home run and Garron Alexander had two hits for Great Oak.
Lakewood 4, Aliso Niguel 0: Ryan Hare pitched Lakewood to victory.
Santa Barbara 10, Orcutt Academy 0: The Dons are 5-0 and begin Channel League action on Friday against San Marcos. John Jensen had a two-run home run.
New Community Jewish 9, Faith Baptist 1: Adir Bernshtein hit his first home run and Zach Miller and Ben Glaser combined on a three-hitter.
Villa Park 6, Los Amigos 4: The Spartans improved to 4-1.
