Baseball: Chase Strumpf gets six RBIs in JSerra victory
Sophomore shortstop Chase Strumpf hit a grand slam and finished with three hits and six RBIs in JSerra’s 13-2 Trinity League victory over Santa Margarita on Tuesday.
JSerra, ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Division 1, is 18-5 and 10-2. Mater Dei defeated Servite, 2-1. Charlie Vorsheck threw a complete game. Josh Blank had two hits and two RBIs. Josh Stephen when three for four. Orange Lutheran scored seven runs in the sixth inning en route to a 10-5 win over St. John Bosco. Josh Morgan had two hits and two RBIs.
In the Mission League, Alemany is surging after a 5-2 win over Loyola. That comes after a win last week over Harvard-Westlake. It’s now a three-way battle for first place among the Warriors (18-5-2, 7-2), Loyola (19-5-1, 8-2-1) and Harvard-Westlake (19-5-1, 6-2-1).
Alemany’s Brandon Ponticelli (8-1) struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings. Carter Yankie struck out the last two batters with the tying run at the plate. The two teams play again on Friday at Alemany. Harvard-Westlake defeated Chaminade, 4-1. Jack Flaherty improved to 8-0 and 21-0 over two seasons by striking out nine and allowing three hits. John Thomas had two hits and two RBIs.
Crespi defeated St. Francis, 8-3. Justin Dehn threw a complete game, striking out five. Mitchell Herbster had three hits and three RBIs. Chris May, Matt Cassin and Matt Orozco added two hits apiece.
In the Marine League, Narbonne clinched at least a share of the title with a 7-5 victory over Banning. Anthony Savage wiped out a 5-3 deficit with a two-out grand slam in the sixth inning. Daniel Rocha also hit a two-run home run for the Gauchos.
In the Western League, Holt Maybank retired 18 consecutive batters in Palisades’ 5-2 win over University. He struck out 11 and walked three. He also had two hits. Hamilton received a two-run home run from Hector Velazquez to defeat Westchester, 7-6.
In the Baseline League, Glendora (18-5, 11-1) defeated Los Osos, 3-1, to clinch the league title. Kale Morton threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts. He’s 9-0 this season. Justin Cage had two hits.
In the Del Rey League, Bishop Amat defeated La Salle, 9-1. Alex Garcia struck out nine and allowed two hits Michael Palos went three for four with fove RBIs. Sergio Robles had a triple and two singles.
In the Channel League, Buena defeated Santa Barbara, 4-3. Ryan Coker hit a two-run home run. Austin Rubick struck out 10 for Buena. Kevin Gowdy had six strikeouts for Santa Barbara.
In the Southwestern League, Great Oak defeated Temecula Valley, 10-2. Mitchell Hayes had a three-run home run. Chandler Wagoner had four RBIs.
Village Christian defeated Campbell Hall, 8-2. Jesse Hanckel struck out five in four innings. David Barta added five strikeouts in three innings. Ventura defeated San Marcos, 2-0. Oxnard defeated Channel Islands, 4-3.
Sierra Canyon defeated Windward, 3-1. Jackson Ramey threw a two-hitter. Zach Tavelman had two hits.
Santa Monica improved to 22-4 with an 8-1 win over Beverly Hills. Junior Noah Barba had three hits and four RBIs.
Warren (21-4) defeated Lynwood, 11-0. Steven Nuno went three for four. Gardena Serra defeated Bishop Montgomery, 9-4. Den’zl Chapman had a single, double and two RBIs.
In the Pacific League, Crescenta Valley defeated Burbank, 11-0. Michael Russo had three hits and five RBIs, including a home run.
