Baseball: City Section playoff roundup
No. 3-seeded Kennedy had to work extra hard but finally defeated Hamilton, 6-5, on Wednesday in a City Section Division I playoff opener on a game-winning RBI single by Alejandro Vasquez in the seventh inning.
No. 10-seeded Granada Hills took out defending City champion San Fernando with a 4-2 victory. The Tigers decided not to use All-City pitcher Alonzo Garcia, but Kai Gomez threw well, striking out eight and walking one.
Granada Hills was able to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a bases loaded walk and an RBI single by Michael Scolaro, who finished with three RBIs and two hits. Garcia and Ariel Torres had two hits apiece for the Tigers. Sophomore left-hander Chris Murphy picked up the win. Scolaro got the save.
No. 2-seeded Narbonne rolled to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Cleveland. Daniel Rocha struck out 10 for the Gauchos, who will host Granada Hills on Friday. Scott Savage had a home run and three RBIs.
Chatsworth defeated North Hollywood, 17-1, in five innings. Sam Shaikin and Peter Abinanti each had two hits. The Chancellors will play at Banning on Friday. Banning defeated Taft, 4-2. Gino Brockway threw a complete game, striking out six and walking none.
Jeremy Polon threw a complete game, striking out five, in El Camino Real’s 9-0 win over Verdugo Hills. Tommy Derry had three RBIs and Hayden Rappoport and Christian Bloom added two apiece. The top-seeded Conquistadores will face Palisades, a 5-4 winner over Sylmar.
Birmingham received a complete game from Adrian Rodriguez in a 5-1 win over Marshall. Victor Robles had two hits and two RBIs. Alexis Miranda added two hits. Birmingham will play at Kennedy on Friday.
