Baseball: Hamilton wins tournament championship
Hamilton won the Dennis Gilbert Classic on Saturday at the Urban Youth Academy, defeating Verdugo Hills, 5-4, in nine innings in the championship game.
Hector Velazquez had two hits, including the game-winning RBI in the ninth. Ethan Lazar contributed three hits. All-City catcher Dalton Blumenfeld showed he also has a good arm, throwing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Benji Kaiserman and Dakota Kravetz added two hits apiece.
Augie Lozano led Verdugo Hills with two hits and two RBIs.
Harvard-Westlake defeated Saugus, 4-3, in nine innings. Brian Ginsberg had the game-winning hit. Loyola defeated La Mirada, 5-4. Quinn Brodey had a home run. Julian Gonzalez threw a scoreless seventh for the save. Jeff Murray had three hits for La Mirada.
Cypress defeated Bishop Amat, 4-2. Garret Brockel went three for three. Moorpark defeated Marshall, 10-1. Troy Conway had three hits.
Los Alamitos defeated Los Osos, 4-1. Glenn defeated Peninsula, 7-5.
El Segundo defeated Cathdral, 6-1. Connor Underwood had three RBIs. Tanner Stevens threw five shutout innings.
Lakewood defeated Oaks Christian, 7-0. Ryan Hare threw six shutout innings.
