Baseball: Hart, Saugus reach Division 1 semifinals
Keyed by a three-run double by Robert Reeves during a five-run fifth inning, Newhall Hart eliminated No. 1-seeded JSerra, 10-6, on Friday to earn a spot in next week’s Southern Section Division 1 semifinals.
“It was a big win,” Hart Coach Jim Ozella said.
Austin Russ had a two-run double and Nick Hand added three hits. JSerra’s Royce Lewis went four for four, but the Lions’ pitchers struggled all day.
Hart, the Foothill League champion, will face its Foothill League rival, Saugus, which defeated Arlington, 3-2, on a walk-off single by Brendan Griffith. Caden Maher had a perfect game for 6 1/3 innings. The two teams are expected to play on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at College of the Canyons.
In Division 2, San Clemente pulled out a 4-3 win over Bonita in 10 innings. Tyler Ankrom hit a home run in the seventh for San Clemente to send it into extra innings. Mission Viejo defeated Royal, 2-1, in nine innings. Patrick Sandoval struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings. Chino Hills defeated Moorpark, 3-2, in nine innings. Christopher Ceballos had a home run for Chino Hills. Griffin Mazur had two hits for Moorpark.
Crescenta Valley defeated Carter, 1-0. Eric Ma threw the shutout and Rene Lynch had the walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh.
In Division 3, San Dimas improved to 31-0 with a 1-0 win over Santa Monica. Peter Lambert (13-0) struck out seven, walked two and gave up three hits. Tommy Acuna drove in the game’s only run in the first inning on a single. Bishop Amat defeated Paloma Valley, 3-2. Isaac Esqueda struck out seven. Clarence Carter had two hits.
In Division 6, Buckley scored seven runs in the seventh inning to upset No. 1-seeded Sage Hill, 7-5.
