Baseball: JSerra enjoys its experience at Angel Stadium

JSerra looked very comfortable and confident playing against St. John Bosco on Wednesday in a Trinity League game at Angel Stadium. The Lions won, 6-0, behind Quentin Longrie, who threw six shutout innings, striking out six, walking one and allowing three hits.

“It’s a cool experience to be a part of,” Coach Brett Kay said.

He had to halt the interview with, “Excuse me,” when he saw his 2-year-old son, Brody, suddenly running out to the pitcher’s mound.

Now everyone understands how much energy Kay needs on and off the field these days. JSerra is 19-3 overall and in first place in the Trinity League with a 5-2 record. The Lions are clearly the No. 1 team in Southern California, but that hardly means they’re a cinch to dominate the upcoming Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

There are too many good pitchers in Division 1 to say JSerra will end up champion, because on a given day, anything can happen. But the Lions certainly will be tough to beat when they play like they did against the Braves. Their pitcher threw strikes, the hitters had clutch hits and the defense was nearly flawless.

RBI singles were delivered by Sam Cohen, Chase Strumpf, Brady Shockey and Christian Molfetta. That kind of balance is what makes the Lions so dangerous.

St. John Bosco (11-8-1, 3-3) got two hits from Tyler Smith. The two teams play again on Friday at JSerra. The Lions get to play at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at noon in the championship game of the Boras Classic against Mountain View St. Francis.

We’ll see how much energy Kay has left by Saturday afternoon.
