Baseball: Opening day in Boras Classic produces lots of drama
<p>Senior pitcher strikes out nine in Boras Classic win</p>
The first day of the 16-team Boras Classic produced one tough game after another.
There was Alemany pulling out a 5-4, 10-inning win over Palm Desert on a walk-off walk by Christian Goretti. The Warriors rallied for three runs in the 10th, incuding a two-run pinch-hit single by Nick Pico. Cristian Montes had two hits to help Alemany improve to 12-2.
There was Huntington Beach, down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a grand slam from Landon Silver to defeat City Section champion Birmingham, 4-2. Adrian Rodriguez was the tough-luck loser, shutting down the Oilers for five innings.
There was Aliso Niguel hanging on for a 4-3 win over Vista Murrieta. Kyle Molnar struck out nine and allowed three hits. Eric Wagaman delivered the big blow, a three-run home run for Aliso Niguel.
San Clemente defeated Chatsworth, 3-1. Andre Pallante and Tommy Palomera were locked in a 1-1 game until the Tritons scored two runs in the sixth. Adrian Acosta had two hits in his debut for Chatsworth. Nick Henry, Andrew Renteria and Sam Shaikin also had two hits apiece.
Long Beach Wilson defeated Chaminade, 5-2. Zach Pettway struck out eight. Great Oak defeated Damien, 7-3. Eric Sanchez had two hits and Mitch Hayes struck out seven in six innings and helped himself with three RBI.
Michael Thomas threw the shutout in Mater Dei’s 1-0 win over Corona. Brandon Call drove in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly. Quentin Longrie struck out nine and allowed three hits in JSerra’s 4-0 win over Granite Hills. Royce Lewis had two hits and two RBI.
