Boys’ basketball: Results from Fairfax State Preview Classic

Fairfax 64, Sierra Canyon 47: You wouldn’t have known who was No. 1 and who was No. 2, because No. 2 Fairfax controlled the game and won going away. Donald Gipson scored 18 points, Lorne Currie 13 and Lindsey Drew 10. The Lions made eight three pointers in improving to 23-0.

Cody Riley had 14 points and Adam Seiko 13 for Sierra Canyon (16-2). There were so many people trying to get into the Fairfax gym that dozens were left standing outside.

Chino Hills 76, Maranatha 61: LiAngelo Ball scored 36 points for Chino Hills, which led, 22-2, after one quarter. Tyler Dorsey had 31 points, 25 coming in second half. Lonzo Ball had 15 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists.

Windward 76, Gardena Serra 54: Roman Davis contributed 14 points and freshman Jules Bernard 12 in the Wildcats’ rout of Gardena Serra. At one point, Windward had five players who are freshmen on the court. Freshman Payton Moore added 11 points.

Bishop Montgomery 94, Loyola 34: With his father, a former City Section player of year, watching from the bleachers, Stephen Thompson Jr. put on a show, scoring 37 points to help the Knights improve to 23-1. He had 14 points in the first quarter when Bishop Montgomery opened a 23-7 advantage. Christian Oshita added 20 points.

Stephen Thompson Sr. was a standout at Crenshaw and Syracuse and is now an assistant coach at Oregon State, where his oldest son will attend next season. It was only the third time this season he has seen his son because of college coaching commitments.

“I’m sure that motivated him,” Coach Doug Mitchell said.

Price 68, Lawndale 62: In a game that featured three players 6-9 or taller and more than a dozen dunks, Price’s balance proved decisive. Roderick Williams had 17 points, LaRond Williams 16 and Kesean Davis 10. Christian Little added nine points and some big assists.

USC-bound Chimezie Metu had 21 points and some spectacular dunks. Brodricks Jones added 18 points.

Santa Monica 59, Durango 50: Overcoming a 17-point deficit, Santa Monica came away victorious. Jayce Johnson, the 6-foot-11 junior center, had 14 points and Jonah Mathews also had 14. Freshman Spencer Freedman had 13 points, including a huge three in the fourth quarter to lead the Vikings’ comeback.

Calabasas 83, Harvard-Westlake 81: Ryan Ducar scored on a drive to the basket with two seconds left to give Calabasas the victory. Justin Bessard finished with 25 points and Conner Longmire 23. Sophomore Ali Iken made six threes for Harvard-Westlake and had 28 points. Alex Copeland added 27 points.

Taft 53, Brentwood 48: It was an 8 a.m. start, and Taft came out sharp and held on. Darrius Henderson scored 15 points for the Toreadors. Travis Patrick contributed two key baskets in the fourth quarter. Ountae Campbell led Brentwood with 19 points.

Asked how he liked the 8 a.m. start after losing to El Camino Real the previous night, Taft’s Damian Wilson said, “Not at all. It hurt me to wake up after we lost last night.”

El Segundo 66, Rolling Hills Prep 48: Chase Ali-Watkins had 23 points for El Segundo. Rolling Hills Prep had been 15-0.
