Boys’ basketball: Max Hazzard is tournament MVP for Loyola [Updated]

Unbeaten Los Angeles Loyola, ranked No. 2 by The Times, won its 12th consecutive game on Monday night with a 78-57 victory over No. 3 Corona Centennial in the championship game of the Under Armour tournament in San Diego.

Junior guard Max Hazzard was named tournament MVP. He had 17 points in the final. Thomas Welsh led the Cubs with 25 points and Parker Jackson-Cartwright had 18. Loyola has one final game on Saturday in the Redondo one-day tournament before opening Mission League play next week. Centennial dropped to 12-2.

Sierra Canyon knocked off another top team, beating Chino Hills, 60-50, for third place in San Diego. If the Southern Section put together its Open Division playoff bracket after the first month of the season, the Trailblazers (13-1) would be one of the teams selected. Devearl Ramsey had 15 points.

Redondo (11-3) handed Torrance Bishop Montgomery (13-1) its first defeat, 63-56, in the championship game of the Redondo tournament. Terrell Carter was named tournament MVP after scoring 20 points and getting 14 rebounds.

No. 1 Mater Dei won the Orange Holiday Classic with a 75-54 win over Pasadena. Rex Pflueger scored 21 points and Stanley Johnson had 20. MJ Cage had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Pflueger and Cage were co-MVPs.

In the Covina finals, tournament MVP Jeremy Hemsley had 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in Damien’s 60-58 win over Walnut.

Calabasas won the consolation championship at the MaxPreps tournament, defeating Christian Brothers, 75-55. Austin Smith had 22 points. Wyoming-bound Jeremy Lieberman made the all-tournament team. Harvard-Westlake defeated Washington Issaquah, 61-58. Alex Copeland had 23 points and made all-tounrament. The Wolverines continue to do well without Derick Newton, who has been injured.

Buckley is 13-0 after winning its division of the MaxPreps tournament with a 77-37 victory over Cathedral City.

Etiwanda (13-2) put an end to a two-game losing streak with a 64-57 win over Columbia Christian. Kenny Barnes had 18 points.

Westchester defeated Long Beach Poly, 68-65, giving Coach Ed Azzam 803 victories, tying him with Crenshaw’s Willie West in City Section history for most wins. Elijah Stewart led the Comets with 21 points.

Rancho Cucamonga (12-2) won its division of the MaxPreps tournament with a 64-55 win over Riverside King. Victor Joseph had 21 points. Brentwood won its division with a 70-42 win over Bell-Jeff. Tra Holder was tournament MVP. Maxwell Kupchak had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Viewpont won its division championship with a 70-57 win over Torrane. Tim Howell was MVP. He finished with 30 points.

In Northern California, Crespi lost to Sacramento Grant, 61-58, in the championship game of the Marin Catholic tournament. DJ Ursery had 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Rancho Verde defeated Westlake, 35-32. Tre Nottingham had 18 points for Rancho Verde. Christian Marquez led Westlake with 10 points.

Capistrano Valley knocked off Thousand Oaks, 66-58. Matt Hauser had 24 points for the Lancers and made all-tournament.

In the Redondo tournament, Price defeated North Torrance, 90-55, in the fifth-place game. James Washington made all-tournament. Muir defeated LB Jordan, 69-67, for seventh place. Dejon Williams of Muir made all-tournament. Culver City defeated Rolling Hills Prep, 65-61. Compton Centennial defeated St. Bernard, 52-45. Rio Americano defeated Locke, 61-32.

In the Hart tournament, Hart won the championship with a 78-57 win over Righetti. MVP Lewis Stallworth had 26 points and Myles Franklin 19. Village Christian took third place with a 76-67 win over Highland. Bennie Boatwright had 25 points.

Temple City defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 66-63. Ali Elhawary had 21 points. Gabe Rishwain led Notre Dame with 18 points.

Newbury Park advanced to the championship game of the Santa Barbara tournament with a 65-50 win over Camarillo. Jake Briggins had 18 points, including six three-pointers.

In the Chaminade tournament, Chaminade won the championship with a 60-49 win over Eastside Catholic. Jack Williams was MVP. Jordan Ogundiran had 13 points and Trevor Stanback 12. Oaks Christian took third place with an 80-66 win over Valencia. Aleks Abrams scored 33 points and had 11 rebounds.

In Santa Maria, El Camino Real advanced to the championship game with a 66-62 win over Lawdale. Maleke Haynes had 21 points.

Campbell Hall defeated West Ranch, 72-59. Aaron Holiday had 25 points and Kahlil Simplis had 16 points and nine assists. Crescenta Valley defeated Grant, 74-47. Kevin Dinges had 23 points.
