Boys’ basketball: Sierra Canyon wins despite 40 points by Lonzo Ball

Cody Riley finished with 21 points to help Sierra Canyon open a 22-point halftime lead and withstand a Lonzo Ball offensive outburst in the second half to defeat Chino Hills, 77-67, in the semifinals of the Fairfax tournament on Friday.

In defeat, Ball became the first player in the history of the Fairfax tournament to score 40 or more points in three consecutive games. The junior point guard committed to UCLA had 45 points against Harvard-Westlake on Monday. He had 43 points against Lawndale on Wednesday. He finished with 40 points against Sierra Canyon, including eight threes.

Chino Hills made a terrific second-half comeback and there’s every indication the Huskies should be very good next season once Ball’s younger brother, LiAngelo, returns from a foot injury.

Sierra Canyon will play Corona Centennial in Saturday’s 6 p.m. final. Khalil Ahmad made a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Centennial a 66-64 win over Alemany. Daron Henson scored 31 points for Alemany. Sedrick Barefield had 26 points and Ahmad 25 for Centennial.

In consolation games, Michael Ogunine scored 19 points in Chaminade’s 72-58 win over Loyola. Crespi defeated Brentwood, 69-54, behind De’Anthony Melton, who scored 26 points. Alex Copeland had 26 points in Harvard-Westlake’s 71-41 win over El Segundo.

Fairfax defeated Mater Dei, 59-53. Lawndale defeated Orange Lutheran, 57-51. Santa Monica defeated La Canada, 68-63.
