Boys’ basketball: LiAngelo Ball scores 72 points in latest Chino Hills scoring outburst
LiAngelo Ball of Chino Hills is on a scoring tear to start the season.
One night after scoring 56 points, the senior guard who signed with UCLA poured in 72 points on Wednesday night in Chino Hills’ 128-108 win over Rancho Christian in the Corona Centennial tournament. He made 13 threes. Brother LaMelo, a sophomore who’s also committed to UCLA, had 31 points.
The 72 points is a school record but far short of a Southern Section record. That’s held by Tigran Grigorian of Los Angeles Mesrobian who scored 100 points in a game during the 2002-03 season. CalHiSports.com has his performance at No. 10 on the all-time single game scoring list for California.
It was quite a night for the Ball brothers. Oldest brother Lonzo set a UCLA freshman assists record with 13 in the Bruins’ 98-56 win over UC Riverside.
It was the third consecutive game the Huskies (3-0) surpassed 100 points. They tied the state record last season with 18.
Chino Hills is set to play Foothills Christian on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Centennial in a matchup of future UCLA guards. Foothills Christian has signee Jaylen Hands and is coached by the father of UCLA freshman T.J. Leaf. Centennial will play Long Beach Poly at 8 p.m.
