Cathedral is the new No. 1 team in Division 1 soccer
It was No. 1 vs. No. 2 in high school boys’ soccer on Friday night in downtown Los Angeles, and No. 2 Cathedral defeated No. 1 Servite, 3-0, in a battle of the top Southern Section Division 1 teams.
Cathedral is in its first season of Division 1 soccer.
Xavier Cruzata and Alex Lugo had goals for the Phantoms, who are 11-2-4 overall. Goalie Richard Rangul got his 12th shutout.
It was a tough week for Servite, which had to win two Trinity League games earlier in the week.
“It was exceptional, a great turnout,” Cathedral Coach Arturo Lopez said.
There were a dozen college recruiters in attendance, including UCLA and Cal State Fullerton.
Another school on the rise is Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. The Knights are 4-0 in the Mission League. Allen Moiseyev, a former Academy league player, has 13 goals in 10 games.
