Football: It’s showdown time in the Coliseum League

Dorsey’s one-point victory over Los Angeles on Friday has left the Dons in control of their own destiny and sets up a critical Coliseum League showdown on Thursday (change) against unbeaten Hawkins at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

A win by the Dons, followed by another win on Oct. 22 against Crenshaw at the Coliseum, and the race would be over.

Hawkins hasn’t been tested except for an impressive win over one of San Diego’s best teams, Chula Vista Mater Dei.

Dorsey’s defense will have to cover Hawkins’ top receivers and play better in the first half. The Dons have been forced to rally in the second half in recent weeks, but falling behind Hawkins is not a wise move.

Quarterback Jerman Gotoy has been coming through in the clutch for Dorsey. And will be interesting to see if Hawkins has any lineman to block sophomore Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Hawkins has lots of speed on defense, so Dorsey will need to take care of the football and avoid turnovers and penalities.
